Bible Promises for Grief and Loss

Certainly no amount of Bible verses can take away the pain or grief of the loss of a loved one, and of course, that’s not the point of these promises. The point is to help reassure ourselves of God’s loving presence during the most difficult of times.

  1. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
  2. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” – Matthew 5:4
  3. “The Lord is my shepherd; … Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” – Psalm 23:1, 4
  4. “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:38-39
  5. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” – Psalm 46:1
  6. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
  7. “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” – Philippians 4:13

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. – 2 Corinthians 1:3-5
